Ben Jones – engineering apprentice
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after leaving school and started looking at apprenticeships to enable me to get a taste of a career whilst progressing my education and earning money – and I haven’t looked back since!” said 21-year-old Ben Jones.
Ben, an apprentice project engineer at Bromford Housing Ltd, is combining working for the company with studying for an HNC in construction and the built environment at college, added: “My job entails the management of engineering and technical aspects of housing projects through appraisal to construction, specifically the co-ordination of highway, drainage and utility works including relevant construction drawings and legal agreements.
“My education at college is giving me a wider understanding of the industry that I can apply and relate to the processes at work, and training on-the-job in the workplace, completing tasks and resolving problems that arise on a day-to-day basis, is enabling me to become more independent in my work prior to becoming fully qualified.
“The biggest advantage of an apprenticeship is gaining real work experience and developing skills with guidance from colleagues, as well as the obvious financial benefits of earning a wage and not taking on student loan fees – I’d advise anyone who is unsure of what to do after leaving school to look at all opportunities, including apprenticeships, before deciding on their career path.”
