Charlotte Rose, a senior environmental health officer at City of Wolverhampton Council, chose to study for the Level 5 leadership and management apprenticeship to expand her leadership role and has since gained a promotion to team leader in the organisation’s commercial regulation service.
Charlotte, aged 38, said: “The apprenticeship allowed me to develop and expand on a number of my existing leadership and management skills, where I’ve learnt how to apply theories to practice, gained a better understanding of how and why people react and respond in a certain way in a given situation, and I’ve learnt more about budgeting, programme management and stakeholder engagement.
“When I started the apprenticeship, I was on secondment as a service lead for COVID business support where I was leading and managing a new team of professional officers in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. I was able to use my existing leadership experience as a senior officer, and what I was learning on the course, to apply to the secondment role and, in turn, this helped me to gain my recent team leader management position.
“The apprenticeship was rewarding and is a comfortable way of progressing whilst studying on the job. It’s adaptable to ensure a healthy work-life balance and, going forward, I am planning to continue studying and explore other opportunities to further develop my knowledge base in my areas of expertise and my new management role.”
