Preparing to Work in Schools Level 1 Award

If you want to work as a support worker or teaching assistant in an educational setting, this course will enable you to develop an understanding of the teaching and learning environment.

You will learn about the development of children and young people and how to support their wellbeing, as well as how to support mature students, learners with special needs, and those for whom English is an additional language.

You will also have the opportunity to improve your English and maths skills as part of the course.

This course is ideal if you are waiting for your Level 2 course to commence in September, or if you need to improve your skills and knowledge to enable you to gain a placement in a school setting.

To access this course you are required to demonstrate that you are working at Level 1 in English and maths.

Whilst a placement in a relevant setting is not a requirement of the course, you are advised to source a placement as part of your personal development and to prepare you to progress to a Level 2 qualification.

During the course you will gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • Schools as organisations
  • How to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well
  • How to communicate with children, young people and adults

During the course you will gain skills in how to:

● Apply policies and procedures within schools

● Communicate effectively

● Keep individuals safe in the school environment

● Reflect, plan and prioritise

● Work as part of a team

This is an assessment-based course and there are no exams. You will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Assignments
  • Case studies
  • Oral and written questions
  • Projects

Successful completion of the course will enable you to progress to:

  • Teaching Assistant Level 2 Certificate
  • Volunteer in a school or other educational setting

The course is flexible and is a combination of college and online learning sessions and you will be taught by qualified staff who have extensive experience of working in schools or early years settings.
