A Level History

Are you passionate about discovering how the world today has developed? Are you interested in analysing events from the past and hoping to improve the future? Then this is the right course for you!

A Level History brings together the study of history, culture, politics, economics, sociology and psychology. It is an exciting subject that encourages you to question events of the past and to draw your own conclusions.

History is a well-respected subject and welcomed by all universities, while the skills you learn are highly valued by employers in all career paths.

As part of your course you will learn about the reform of the church under Henry VIII, change in society under Elizabeth I, and why Hitler came to power in Germany.   

Please note - when applying for any A level on our website, this submits your application for the full A level programme. You only need to apply for one subject - your other subject choices will be discussed at interview.

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Five or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and maths
  • The required QoE score

During this course you will study:

  • The Tudors: England, 1485-1603 
  • Democracy and Nazism: Germany, 1918-1945 
  • Historical Investigation   

By studying this course you will:

  • Develop your understanding of history's intrinsic value and significance in society  
  • Acquire an understanding of different identities within society and an appreciation of social, cultural, religious and ethnic diversity through the study of all aspects of British and non-British history  
  • Acquire an understanding of the nature of historical study, for example, that history is concerned with judgments based on available evidence and that historical judgments may be provisional and subject to change as new evidence comes to light  
  • Develop the ability to ask relevant and significant questions about the past and to research them  
  • Develop your confidence as an effective and independent learner with an ability to think critically and reflectively with an enquiring mind  
  • Develop your use and understanding of historical terms, concepts and skills  
  • Improve your ability to make links and draw comparisons within and/or across different periods and aspects of the past  
  • Improve your confidence in arguing a case and reaching substantiated judgments through organising and communicating your historical knowledge and understanding in different ways  
  • Improve your research, analytical, critical reasoning, presentation, verbal and written skills  
  • Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in class debates and presentations 

You will be assessed in the following ways:

  • Two exams
  • One piece of coursework of 3,500 words

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Pursue a career in a range of areas including law, civil service, education, journalism, business, finance, intelligence work, publishing, archeology, museum work, heritage or the armed forces
  • Progress on to higher education, employment or an apprenticeship

We have a 100% A-Level success rate on this course and excellent feedback from our past students, some of whom have progressed to study Philosophy, History, Law, Veterinary Science, and Politics at a number of prestigious Universities. These include the University of Warwick, University of Wolverhampton, the University and Bristol University. Other career paths for students have included Teaching, Journalism and Law.
