Applied Law gives an understanding of the role of law in today's society and raises awareness of the rights and responsibilities of individuals. It also gives an understanding of how and where Laws are made and the roles of people working within law such as lawyers, magistrates and juries.

By learning about legal rules and how and why they apply to real life, this course will allow you to develop your skills in analytical ability, decision making, critical thinking and problem-solving. All these skills are highly sought after at higher education level and by employers.   

This course is ideal if you are interested in a career as a Paralegal, Police Officer, Civil Servant, Probation Officer or Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive.

To access this course you are required to have: 

Five or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including a 4 in English and maths

Investigating aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System
Applying the Law
Aspects of Family Law

By studying this course you will gain practical skills and knowledge in the following areas:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of precedent, the civil justice system and process and the concept of negligence in English civil law, together with legal skills of research and communication
Be able to apply knowledge and understanding to examine negligence scenarios and advise clients on the likely outcome of negligence claims, making connections to precedent, courts and appeals, personnel and funding.
Analyse legal information, demonstrating the ability to interpret the potential impact and influence on future cases
Explore how statutory rules are made and interpreted
Examine how legislation is made outside of Parliament
Explore the various legal personnel involved in a criminal trial
Apply the key elements of crime and sentencing in non-fatal offence case studies
Apply the laws relating to both homicide and offences against property together with the law relating to police procedure, using legal terminology and relevant case law and statute law to illustrate points made and make connections
Analyse the law relating to homicide, property offences and police procedure, demonstrating the ability to interpret the potential impact, outcome and influence on future cases
Explore the legal rules governing the formation of marriages, civil partnerships and cohabitation
Examine the various methods for dissolving a relationship
Investigate the legal rules governing the distribution of money and property on the breakdown of a relationship
Examine how the courts resolve disputes over children

You will be assessed through a combination of internal and external assessments. This includes the following:

Dispute solving in Civil Law - externally assessed through examination (worth 25% of overall grade)
Investigating aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System- internally assessed through assignment work (worth 25% of overall grade)
Applying the Law - externally assessed through examination (worth 33% of overall grade)
Aspects of Family Law - internally assessed through assignment work (worth 17% of overall grade)

You can progress to an exciting range of higher-level qualifications and related degrees including Law, Criminology, Business, International Law or Politics.
