The Protective Services (Police Pathway) Level 3 Extended Diploma is the natural progression from the Level 3 National Foundation Diploma and will further enhance your knowledge and skills to enable to take the next step towards your future career in the police service. 

You will build on the skills you gained in your first year of study and learn about major incidents, international perspectives, criminology and your own personal effectiveness in emergency situations, as well as gain an awareness of the service and a range of key transferable skills to meet the operational requirements of the police service in the UK.  

The course combines scenario-based learning and simulated service situations, together with lectures and seminars taught by experienced academic staff and retired experienced police officers, and will equip you with learning, confidence and experience that will be valuable in your future career. 

A strong emphasis is placed on working effectively in a team and you will take part in a variety of outdoor activities, as well as work on your physical fitness by taking part in sports activities to bring you up to the level required by the police service.   

As part of the course you will be required to compete a 30-hour work expereince placement, giving you a taste of real working life and the opportunity to put the skills you learn on the course into practice in the workplace. 

Successful completion of the extended diploma will enable you to apply for a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) or a BSs (Hons) Policing and Intelligence at the University of Wolverhampton or University of Staffordshire. 

Please note: You will be required to purchase a college-branded uniform costing approximately £70 - order forms will be provided before the start of the course and financial support may be available to help with these costs.

  • Protective Services RQF Level 3 Foundation Diploma  

You will also be required to purchase a college-branded uniform - details will be provided before the start of the course.

By studying this course you will:  

  • Gain an understanding of the operation and function of the police service 
  • Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including essential employability skills   
  • Develop the levels of fitness required for a career in the police and how to improve your health and fitness to the required standard 
  • Gain valuable leadership, team working and communication skills by taking part in team-building activities and educational visits  
  • Develop common core knowledge of government policies, crime and its effects on society and citizenship and diversity  
  • Improve your English skills by using conflict management skills (speaking & listening), reading investigations (reading) and completing a written statement (writing)  
  • Develop your maths skills through comparing criminal statistics (number) and interpreting fitness testing data (data)

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:  

  • Apply for a Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship 
  • Progress to a HE qualification in a specialist areas, such as public services or policing 
  • Progress on to a HE course in specialist areas such as public services or policing  
  • Apply for a BSc (Hons) Policing and Intelligence 
  • Apply for a degree in criminology or law
