Careers in the public services can be incredibly rewarding and this course will give you the skills and level of physical fitness you need to enter public service organisations.   

You will learn about the role and work of a range of public services and how they each contribute to public and community safety; as well as gain an understanding of the meaning and relevance of citizenship and diversity.   

You will learn important skills that are vital for working in a public service role - including communication, planning and team working, as well as improving your fitness and taking part in outward-bound expeditions     

We have excellent links with local and national uniformed service organisations and, as part of your course, you will get the chance to take part in a range of training and residential activities, which in the past has included:    

  • A one-day Armed Forces Challenge  
  • Large incident training with the Police, Fire and Ambulance services  
  • Exercise Eagle Learner - a work experience program with army personnel from 4 MERCIAN  

You will be required to attend lessons to improve your English and maths (or use the time for directed study if you already have Grade 4 or above) and complete 30 hours of a work experience placement.

You will also be required to purchase a college-branded uniform costing approximately £70 - order forms will be provided before the start of the course and financial support may be available to help with these costs.  

Also, if you earn less than £30,000 per year and aged 19 or over, you could study this course for FREE!

To access this course you are required to have:

 

During this course, you will study a selection of mandatory and optional units including:   

  • The role and work of the public services   
  • Working skills in the public service sector  
  • Citizenship, society and the public services   
  • Crime and its effects on society and individuals   
  • Land navigation by map and compass   
  • Multi-day expedition experience   
  • Security procedures in the public services    

By studying this course, you will: 

  • Gain an understanding of the role and work of the public service sectors  
  • Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in team-building activities and educational visits  
  • Develop skills in navigation and map-reading 
  • Gain the opportunity to volunteer in and support the local community  
  • Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes to support a successful working life  
  • Discover, develop and maintain the levels of fitness required for each of the uniformed services

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:  

  • Progress to the Protective Services BTEC Level 3 national extended diploma in protective services (MAFA or Police Pathway)*   

*Supports progression to the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)    

  • Develop leadership, team working and communication skills   
  • Take part in a range of outdoor activities   
  • Visit public service organisations as part of your course   
  • Improve your own health and fitness   
  • Tutors with many years' experience of working in uniformed public services

As part of the course you will get to visit a range of destinations and organisations which, in the past, have included the National Justice Museum, Houses of Parliament, Bilston Fire Station and Cannock Chase; participate in riot training, driver safety and emergency response scenarios, and hear from guest speakers from a range of public services who will talk about career opportunities and their first-hand experiences to inspire and motivate you to get the most out of your learning and progress to a successful future in your chosen service.
