Hairdressing apprentices who are studying for their qualifications at City of Wolverhampton College’s Hair Training Academy in Worcester haven’t let the current closure of salons get in the way of continuing to develop their skills.
A total of 12 apprentices – who combine working in salons in the area with studying for their diplomas in hairdressing and barbering – took part in an online challenge to create VE Day-themed styles on mannequins.
Tutors and salon managers joined in the challenge by hosting virtual demonstrations and apprentices were asked to submit pictures of their creations online for judging.
Entries included classic 1940s up-dos, as well as modern interpretations of traditional styles, with Jessica Ogden, aged 19, an apprentice at Lucy Potter Hair and Beauty in Kidderminster, named winner of the competition.
Jessica said: “Entering the competition was a great opportunity during lockdown and was a challenge to get stuck into which I enjoyed. I took my inspiration from old photos and tried to include different components to create a unique look.”
