After working in retail and catering for many years and with her two children growing up, 40-year-old mum of two Lynsey Selman decided that it was time to do something for herself and, having wanted to get into hairdressing for many years, signed up for the Level 2 certificate.
Lynsey said: “I’m really pleased I made the decision to come to college – I feel as though I’ve found myself and my confidence has really increased.
“I’ve learnt so much already and because the course is part-time over three days a week it means that I can fit studying around my job.
“Working in the Academy hair salon is great preparation for a career in the industry – clients know you’re a student and are happy that you ask for advice as you go along, and the tutors are really supportive and help with anything you’re unsure of.
“It feels great when I get good comments from clients and I can think ‘I did that – I’ve got a talent!’”
With a creative hobby making wedding invitations and having organised a few weddings herself, Lynsey hopes to specialise in bridal hair so that she can offer a complete package to brides-to-be
