Two members of staff from housing organisation Property Plus recently completed the Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice.
Amy Griffith, senior operations manager, and Robyn Williams, health and safety officer, studied for the one-year part-time qualification at the college’s Polymer Training and Innovation Centre in Telford.
Amy said: “Having already completed my NEBOSH construction certification, SMSTS and scaffold inspection, I wanted to study a subject that would complement these existing qualifications.
“Whilst these qualifications are obviously extremely important, this course was aimed at taking a more proactive approach to health and safety management systems and reviews, rather than the physical management of a construction site.
“The course was predominantly portfolio-based which I had to apply to my own organisation, evidencing every step of the way how I could demonstrate the course criteria in a relevant work situation. It was very thought provoking and helped me to question some of our own local level processes to ensure these remain robust.”
Robyn added “I had also already completed my NEBOSH national general certificate in health and safety and, having worked as a health and safety officer for over nine years, it was a natural progression for me to complete my Level 5 NVQ Diploma as the course focused on evidencing my knowledge of health and safety practice.
“Completing the qualification has been a really positive experience. I particularly enjoyed expanding my knowledge of organisational work processes in relation to health and safety to ensure risks within the organisation are adequately managed.”
