Liam Davis is now in his fourth year at the college as, after gaining his Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 hairdressing qualifications he progressed to the Level 3 diploma in barbering.
Liam, aged 19, said: “I really enjoyed my hairdressing training and wanted to also learn barbering so that when I’m working in a salon in the future I can cater for all clients.
“I’m learning fading, beard shaping and how to use a cut-throat razor, as well as aftercare advice and about different scalp conditions.
“In salons you can face problems and the college prepares you for this so that if you come across them when you’re working in the industry, you know how to deal with them.
“The course has really improved my confidence and the tutors have been amazing – they constantly watch what you’re doing and advise on where you need to do things differently to improve and provide support if you’re unsure of anything.
“And they also prepare you interviews and how to demonstrate your skills to a potential employer. I recently had an interview and had to do a trade test as part of it, but I felt confident and it was an opportunity to show what I can do.”
Liam, who combines working towards his qualification with running his own mobile hairdressing business, added: “My progress has gone in leaps and bounds! From not knowing anything about hairdressing when I started four years ago, to where I am today is amazing – if you want to be a hairdresser, I’d really recommend doing your training here!
“I eventually want to teach hairdressing and my aim is to get some experience in the industry and gain my assessors award in the next few years.”
Liam’s tutor added: “Liam’s always at college! His attendance and punctuality is second to none and he’s always wanting to learn more and willing to do more.
“Although he already had his hairdressing qualifications, he had to do a trade test to be offered a place on the barbering course and what he demonstrated then, and how his skills have developed since starting the course, have amazed us!”
