“Doing a GCSE in food technology at school made 18-year-old Harry Lunn realise that he wanted a career in the catering industry.
Harry said: “When I first came to the college I didn’t have much confidence so was advised by tutors to do the Level 2 professional bakery qualification first as it would give me a chance to work in a professional environment that wasn’t as fast-paced as a restaurant kitchen.
“It was definitely the right thing to do as I became much more confident over the year and have now progressed to the Level 2 diploma in professional cookery where I’m preparing meals for customers in the Academy restaurant.
“The course has shown me that food isn’t just for eating – as well as practical skills we’re also learning how different ingredients work together and I find that really interesting.
“If you want a qualification for your future career college is definitely the right route to take – and because courses are free for 16-18 year-olds you’ve really got nothing to lose!”
