After initially joining college to do a basic construction skills course, 18-year-old Trinity Mason completed a Level 1 diploma in painting and decorating and has now progressed to the Level 2 diploma!
Trinity, who has also gained grade 4 GCSE English and is working to improve her GCSE maths grade, said: ” On the Level 1 course I learnt basic skills painting and decorating skills – such as how to prepare surfaces, cut in, paint a wall, paste wallpaper and do decorative finishes – all of which I needed to know to enable me to do the Level 2 qualification.
“I’m now learning more technical skills – including how to hang different wallpapers, paper a ceiling, mix colours and do wood graining – as well as how to use equipment safely.
“Since starting college I have gained lots of confidence in myself and feel a lot prouder of my work – I’m able to be more independent when it comes to my practical work, and in my theory lessons I can work without much help from my support worker or from my tutor.
“Being at college has given me the opportunity to learn new skills and knowledge and build my confidence and communication skills to help me prepare for employment – in the future I want to either be employed in the painting and decorating industry or think about becoming an interior designer.”
